Studio Ri

I am an artist and maker producing small-batch ceramics from my tiny garden studio in Cambridge, UK.

With an artistic background of ink illustration, I have realised this fluid medium – with its unpredictable bleeds and delicate application – shares aspects mirrored in working with clay. Ceramics has allowed me to create more tangible objects to appreciate as beautiful and functional pieces and I take pleasure in the process and the connection between material, maker and user.

My practice is heavily influenced by Japanese aesthetics alongside the organic and textural intricacies from the natural world. My close connection to natural spaces has encouraged me to find ways to add the visual sense and feelings to my work in ceramics. In particular, I hope to show the inspiration I take from water surfaces and the play of light and shadows. I see beauty and reassurance within subtle colour palettes and I design my pieces to appreciate the softness of the grey stoneware clay.
