In this atmospheric study, Kerrie Creighton turns her focus to St Leonard’s Church in Lexden, capturing the serene architecture of its stone-mullioned Gothic window. Painted with subtle textures and warm, directional light, the artwork weaves local architectural history with a subtle nod to Colchester’s ancient past.
Etched discreetly into the stone sill is the intricate geometric pattern—featuring the distinct bead-and-reel diamond motifs—found on the famous 4th-century Roman lead coffin of the “Lexden Lady,” unearthed nearby and housed in Colchester Castle.
By layering centuries of local history into a single view, Creighton draws a delicate thread between Roman burial rituals and medieval Christian sanctuary, offering a quiet meditation on continuity, place, and sacred ground.
